I've tweaked my XP installation using TuneXP 1.5 and it seems the culprit was the "Speed-up Windows IRQ handling" - I had enabled it some time before I started having the check disk issue (but not immediately before it first occurred, which is why it wasn't obvious) and after I disabled it today, it seems the dirty bit doesn't get created anymore.

Slapo,

I also have this tweak applied.
I am not at this moment with my Aspire One. Afterwards I will try to disable it (although I think I already made tests with all TuneXP tweaks disabled) and I will inform.

Hi again,

I have made some more test disabling "Speed-up Windows IRQ handling" (as well as some other tweaks).
It seems it is a little bit better now, but the problem with the activation of the dirty bit still exists.

I still think that the problem should be related to something introduced in 0.9 versions, since everything is fine with the stable 0.99.

Hi Ramon,

just a quick check:
do you have any kind of defragmenter running on the background, such as Smart Defrag or Diskeeper?
I got one disk check suggestion while running Smart Defrag along with 0.9f today at work.
I've changed the settings of the defragger and got no further check disk suggestions afterwards.

Slapo,

I have no defragmenter on the background.
The activation of the dirty bit is done during shutdown or startup (it can be check with fsutil before shutdown).

Now I returned to version 0.9, since it is running fine in my Acer Aspire One.
I think there is some kind of "problem" with my hardware, since I am one of the few that had registry corruption with the lower filter versions of flashpoint/flashfire.

Anywaty, thank you very much for your suggestion

Zartto, Slapo,

FYI, I have (I think) good news.

I use nod32 antivirus, and I had the "scan at shutdown" option.

I have disabled this option, and by now I have had no more chkdsk at startup with 0.9f version.

Maybe this was also the cause of the registry corruption problem with the lower filter versions of flashpoint/flashfire.

I am very happy :D !!!

Yes, it is a great news to me !
Maybe, I have to try the virus program by myself... to solve the specific problem.

Thank you.

Thanks Ramon,

I use Avast and I can't see any similar option in the settings for it, so I can't test this. :(
I've tried Windows 7 RC1, but it didn't behave well on my computer (no idea why, sometimes the UI would freeze, except for the mouse and some Windows Explorer elements), so I am writing this from a rather fresh installation of Windows XP (installed earlier today). I'll make a restore point and will try 0.9f again.
I'll report back if the check disk problem occurs again.

Zartto, would it be possible to have FlashFire stop buffering data (pretty much disable itself) when the shutdown/reboot/hibernate/sleep sequence/state is initiated?
Perhaps that could solve the dirty bit problem.

Yesterday, shortly after I wrote my previous post in this thread, I installed FlashFire, rebooted and all looked good.
Then I switched "Programs" to "System cache" in the window you can see here: http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/memory-winxp/
Then, after each reboot, check disk would appear, try to check the root partition and reboot.
I had to boot from the Windows CD and repair the installation :P
After that I uninstalled FlashFire, rebooted, changed the settings to Programs again, rebooted, installed FlashFire and it's been OK so far.

Got another bloody check disk start at boot, I've uninstalled Avast and Unlocker and installed Unlocker again, but this time it doesn't run all the time, and Avira Personal edition (I'm at home enjoying my day off now). So far so good and I think either Avast or Unlocker or both were the guilty ones. It's more likely it was Avast, though, as I had Unlocker running after uninstalling Avast for a few reboots and all was good.
I'll see whether Avira will be better in this regard.

Hi again,

I have had some (few) more chkdsks, but much less than before.

I also have the "System cache" tweak activated. I will disable it.
Maybe finally we will find what is causing chkdsk at startup :).
